The Process of Living
By Christine Yurick
I make tea and fill the kettle for the morning coffee.
Soon enough, the dawn bird song begins.
Everyone should be so thrilled to be alive.
Dawn seems to last for ages.
I begin again the process of living;
feeding and cleaning,
tending to plants and people.
The bed gets untucked,
the bed gets made;
the dishes are dirtied,
and then cleaned; the birds
leave and different birds return.
Some things remain over the years,
mostly plants, an ancient jade,
a grapefruit tree, sheltered from the outside,
less bruised than the rest of us.
